Sunday Silence

1986 Halo – Wishing Well, by Understanding

Bred by Oak Cliff Thoroughbreds and raised at Stone Farm, Sunday Silence propelled himself into the spotlight winning the San Felipe S.-G2 and Santa Anita Derby-G1 in the spring of his 3-year-old year. In the Kentucky Derby-G1, he dazzled, winning the race by 2 1/2 lengths over rival Easy Goer. In the Preakness-G1, Sunday Silence defeated Easy Goer again, but this time it was by a head after a thrilling stretch dual. Easy Goer won the Belmont S.-G1, but Sunday Silence had the last word when he won the Breeders’ Cup Classic-G1 by a neck. Voted Horse of the Year and Champion 3YO that season, Sunday Silence finished his career with nine wins and five seconds from 14 starts for earnings of $4.9 million. Sunday Silence was also a remarkable stallion. He was purchased for stud duty in Japan and topped the sire list over a dozen times.
