Bred by Stone Farm in partnership with Leone J. Peters, Risen Star was raised at Stone Farm and sold by the farm as a 2-year-old for $300,000. Raced by trainer Louis Roussel and partner Ronnie Lamarque, Risen Star won two of three races at two and came out gangbusters at three. His victories included the Louisiana Derby-G3 and Lexington S.-G2 before a third-place finish in the Kentucky Derby-G1, behind Winning Colors and Forty Niner. Risen Star turned the tables on those rivals with his victory in the Preakness S.-G1. He then turned in a sensational performance in the Belmont, winning by 14 3/4 lengths and running the 1 1/2 miles in 2:26 2/5. He won eight races and placed three times from 11 starts for earnings just over $2 million.
