Raised at Stone Farm, Exploded was bred by Mary Jones Bradley, Charles Whittingham, and Dr. Buck Wynne, Jr. After the passing of Dr. Wynne, his widow Mrs. Nancy Ann Chandler raced Exploded in partnership with Bradley and Whittingham. Exploded won his first Grade 1 at age five, taking the Hollywood Invitational H. In that race, he equaled the stakes and course record of 2:25 1/5 for the 1 1/2 miles on the grass and defeated Champion Lemhi Gold and multiple G1 winner The Bart. Exploded also won the Del Mar Derby H.-G3, and placed in nine additional graded stakes, seven of which were Grade 1s. He retired with earnings of $797,375 in 49 starts.
