Bricks and Mortar and His Dam Beyond The Waves Honored by KTOB and KTA

Bricks and Mortar has been named Kentucky-bred Horse of the Year and Champion Male Turf Horse, and his dam, Beyond the Waves, has been honored as Broodmare of the Year. The awards are presented by the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders and Kentucky Thoroughbred Association.

Brick and Mortar was foaled and raised at Stone Farm for breeder George Strawbridge Jr. The son of Giant’s Causeway went undefeated in six starts in 2019, winning five Grade 1 races and earning in excess of $6.7 million. Earlier in the year, he was honored with Eclipse Awards as Horse of the Year and Champion Male Turf Horse. Bricks and Mortar is the fourth Kentucky-bred Horse of the Year to have been raised at Stone Farm. The others are Lemhi Gold (1982), Sunday Silence (1989) and Fusaichi Pegasus (2000).

Beyond The Waves, bred and owned by Strawbridge, is boarded at Stone Farm. A stakes winner who also was graded stakes-placed, Beyond The Waves is the dam of six stakes horses from seven starters, including Champion Bricks and Mortar and graded stakes winner Emerald Beech.

The title Broodmare of the Year is a prestigious honor that has been awarded since 1949. Notable honorees in the past include Somethingroyal (dam of Secretariat), Shenanigans (dam of Ruffian), Weekend Surprise (dam of Summer Squall and A.P. Indy) and Personal Ensign (dam of My Flag and Storm Flag Flying). Beyond The Waves is the second Broodmare of the Year to reside at Stone Farm, the first was the mare Anne Campbell, who received the honor in 1999.
