1979 Cougar II – Peacefully, by Jacinto
Raised at Stone Farm, Gato Del Sol was bred and raced by Arthur Hancock in partnership with Leone J. Peters. He was a graded stakes winner at two and at three was second in the San Felipe-G2 and Blue Grass S.-G1 on his way to the Kentucky Derby-G1. Sent off at 21-1, he charged down the stretch and won by 2 1/2 lengths. The victory marked the first Kentucky Derby win for a member of the Hancock family. Gato Del Sol raced for a total of five years and won/placed in 23 races earning $1.3 million. After a stud career in Germany, Gato Del Sol was returned to his birthplace to live out his life. He is buried on the farm.
